Free to Tweet (scholarship)

Free to Tweet, the popular scholarship competition that celebrates the First Amendment, is returning this December, offering five $5,000 scholarships.

The program, which drew national participation and a tweet from the White House in 2011, encourages students 14 and older to tweet about the five freedoms of the First Amendment: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to assemble and the right to petition.

From Dec. 1-15, 2012, students can enter by tweeting about one of these core freedoms with the hashtag #freetotweet.

First Amendment experts and educators will judge the tweets for substance and creativity, naming one winner for each of the five freedoms.

The competition is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and organized by 1 for All, an unprecedented educational and public service campaign that builds understanding of the First Amendment. Free to Tweet is administered by the American Society of News Editors and the First Amendment Center.
