The animal science department welcomed new pigs in the barn for this farrowing season. The farrow season is in January and December. The pigs were all bred in August. If the breeding is successful, the pigs will give birth in late December. The student owners of the pigs plan to sell the piglets in the FFA pig auction to use as show pigs.
The students in animal science classes have recently studied how artificial insemination worked before putting it into action on the pigs in the barn.
Pigs you can find in the barn this year are:
Betty, a Duroc, owned by junior Keeley Scott
Bean, a Hampshire, owned by junior Haylie Gilliatt
Lilo, a Poland China, owned by junior Chloe Smith
BB, a Berkshire, owned by freshman Graydan Padgett
Peach, a Yorkshire, owned by eighth grader Lucas Carmickle
Phyllis, a Crossbred, owned by eighth grader Kutter Springer.
“We are excited to see what this year’s farrowing season brings us,” said Animal Science teacher Cory Scott.
Next, if all pigs are bred, the piglets should be born and the students will be able to learn more about how the birthing process works and what the steps are to make them grow properly and healthy. All students are excited to see the piglets from the new pigs.
