On Wednesday, October 4, PHS held the second Early Release Day of the year, bringing a new event, the PHS Olympics, to the upper gym.
After students arrived at school, all grades migrated to the upper gym. First was the recognition of the Gold Standard Award winners, given to honor the end of the first grading period. Teachers nominated students for demonstrating a gold standard of learning. After concluding this short ceremony, the first PHS Olympics took off. There were seven games that groups of students from each homeroom participated in. The games students participated in were Hungry, Hungry Hippos, Ski Walk, Can-struction, a Jenga Tournament, Twister, Musical Chairs, and the cup balancing challenge.
The winners for each event were:
Can-struction: Sophomore class, which was led by Chad Sullivan, Cannon Lambdin, Cherokee Hopper, Libby Newkirk, and Kody Fortner.
Twister: Sofia Smith, representing the eighth grade class
Musical Chairs: Rusty Turner, representing the freshman class
Cup Balancing Challenge: Jayden Hinkle, representing the senior class
Ski Walk: Chaise Case, Dakota Apple, and Lykon Campbell representing the freshman class
Hungry, Hungry Hippos: The eighth grade class team
Jenga Tournament: Lucas Li representing the seventh grade class
The day’s events were coordinated by the PBIS Committee, led by Spanish Teacher Crystal Shellenberger, U.S. History teacher Chris Lindley, and Science Teacher Lori Str
“We hope these types of activities build community and a sense of belonging at PHS,” said Spanish Teacher Crystal Shellenberger.
The senior class won the Olympics, earning the most points in each category.
Coordinators have announced that students will participate in the annual speech contest and other November Early Release Day activities.
