Librarian Rachel Miller chose an art student from Chris Jones’s art classes to paint the library windows as part of the library’s book promotions throughout the year. This year’s student is junior Haylie Gilliatt. Gilliatt was chosen by both Jones and Miller to paint the windows, as her hard work in Jones’s class has made her stand out.
“Haylie has been a huge asset for the library image. I want to show that the library is a welcoming and fun space, and Haylie’s artwork has been a great way to create that atmosphere for the student body,” said Miller.
Gilliatt chooses the designs she paints after Miller gives her a theme or holiday around which to center the art. Gilliatt does a painting each month. After Gilliatt comes up with a sketch, Miller approves it and starts to outline it on the windows. The painting takes about two days to complete and typically lasts about three weeks.
“Honestly, I love painting the windows a lot, just because it lets me express myself outside of the classroom and everyone gets to see my work. I ended up having the time out of the two other people who wanted to do it and now my time in the library every month painting the windows is something I look forward to,” said Gilliatt.
Gilliatt’s favorite painting she has done so far is “Fall into Reading.” She says it was a very cute piece and looks amazing.
