PHS is known for having the LRCC Program, offering PHS students and surrounding school students the opportunity to take pathway classes. Along
with the pathways already available for students to take, new pathways could be added sometime in the near future.
At the November School Board meeting, Board Member Craig Starr, also the Lost River Career Co-Op Board Representative, mentioned some classes that may be coming to PHS. These new classes are electrician and HVAC.
“I think if we get the right instructor we can, they can do both electrical and HVAC. A lot of people who do HVAC do electrical work too. So I think that’s kind of how I put those two paths. There’s two separate pathways, but I think if we had the right structure, we could offer both pathways,” said Starr.
Although these classes are not set in stone, adding a new class to the program has many steps. The class ideas first need to pique the interest of students, which is where the main problem is for adding new classes. The next step is finding space for the class, followed by finding a teacher.
For the cost of adding more classes to the program, the school covers part of it, and the rest comes from other sources like grants. The School Board is currently applying for the Perkins Grant, which will provide money for the school to help fund these new pathway classes.
“You’d have to pay the teacher. Then the next thing that would come into place is space. We have to have a place to have a class. Then there has to be enough interest to do it. Our building trades program is popular and full,” said Starr.
Although adding these pathways has just begun, adding additional pathways in the future, through the LRCC programs or here at PHS, will provide more paths for graduates.
