The Lady Rams Basketball team started their week on Tuesday, January 2, at home against a PLAC opponent, Perry Central. The Rams went into the half only up by two against the Commodores but had an excellent third quarter, outscoring them 14-6. The Rams won the PLAC matchup 43-33—the leading scorers for the Rams were senior Carley Higgins with 16 points and junior Jericho Hopper with 15 points.
The Lady Rams then played another PLAC team at home on Thursday, January 4, against Crawford County. The Rams were down at the half, 16-23, against the Wolfpack. The Rams bounced back in the third quarter and outscored them 11-4 to make the score tied 27-27. Then Crawford County came out in the fourth quarter and outscored the Rams 16-7. The Lady Rams were defeated 34-43.
The scorers for the Rams were senior Carley Higgins, 18 points; junior Jericho Hopper, 8 points; sophomore Maddie Vernon, 3 points; and junior Lilly Hall, 2 points. The Rams are now 1-2 in the PLAC Conference.
The Lady Rams ended the week at home against Borden on Saturday, January 6. The Rams played a good game and competed at a top level with the No.3 ranked team in Division 1a Indiana Basketball. The Rams competed hard but could not come out with a win, losing to the Braves 44-48.
“We really need to work on starting the game off better instead of starting to play our best in the middle of the game. Also playing how we know how to play all the time, not just sometimes,” said junior Lilly Hall.
The scorers for the Rams were senior Carley Higgins, who scored 19 points, and junior Jericho Hopper, who scored 10. Senior Anna Radcliff, junior Lilly Hall, and sophomore Maddie Vernon each added 5 points to the score. The Rams’ record for the season is now 7-9.
On Friday, January 5, the Varsity Boys basketball team faced off against the Mitchell Bluejackets for a PLAC matchup away at Mitchell. While it was a tough matchup through the entire game, the Rams could pull through to win, 58-54, and move the Rams to 2-0 in PLAC Conference play.
Individually, for the Rams, it was junior Fletcher Cole who led the team offensively with 21 points, while also for the Rams was returning senior Trey Rominger with 17 points and sophomore Treylin Minton with 6 points. Junior Fletcher Cole also earned his 1,000th career point, entering his name into the select group of Rams who have earned this honor.
“It’s a great accomplishment, and there are a lot of great players among that list, of which it is nice to see mine alongside them as well. Though, I can’t wait to continue moving up as my career here at Paoli continues,” said junior Fletcher Cole.
The Rams Varsity boys’ basketball team traveled to Tell City on January 6 to face off against the Marksmen. After a great win against Mitchell the previous night, the boys were ready to continue their winning streak, defeating the Marksmen 57-42. Sophomore Chad Sullivan led the Rams on the offensive side of the ball with 19 points for the Rams, while also scoring for the team was junior Fletcher Cole with 17 and senior Trey Rominger with eight on the night.
“I think we all had a really great game and it was nice being able to get into my groove and just go out there and play my best,” said sophomore Chad Sullivan.
On January 6, the Varsity Wrestling team hosted the Paoli Invitation. For the first match for the Rams, they faced off against Floyd Central (Varsity B) and lost 51-15. Winning for the Rams was junior Jonny Shellenberger at 157 lbs. , sophomore Charlie Higginatin at 165 lbs., and Larry Warren at 175 lbs.
In the second match, the Rams faced off against North Harrison, and they lost 24-42. Winning for the Rams was freshmen Cohen Warren at 132 lbs., sophomore Deegan Brashear at 138 lbs., sophomore Kolt Bonta at 144 lbs., and lastly for the Rams was junior Jonny Shellenberger at the 157 lbs. weight class.
While it was tough in the beginning, the Rams were able to pull out for the win against Clarksville, winning 36-16. Winning individually for the Rams was freshman Cohen Warren at 132 lbs., sophomore Deegan Brashear at 138 lbs., junior Jonny Shellenberger at 157 lbs., sophomore Charlie Higgins at the 165 lbs. weight class, and lastly for the Rams was senior Larry Warren in the 175 lbs. weight class.
The next contender for the Rams was Providence Cristo Rey, but sadly for the Rams, they were defeated 41-23. Though for the Rams, there were some winners within the bunch: sophomore Deegan Brashear won at 138 lbs., junior Jonny Shellenberger at 157 lbs., sophomore Charlie Higgins won in 165 lbs., and lastly for the winning Rams was senior Larry Warren at 175 lbs.
Finally, for the day, the Rams were set to face Rock Creek, but successfully for the Rams, they had won 42-12. Winning for the Rams was sophomore Charlie Higgins, winning at 165 lbs., while also for the winning Rams due to forfeit were the following: freshmen Cohen Warren, sophomore Deegan Brashear, sophomore Kolt Bonta, junior Jonny Shellenberger, senior Larry Warren, and also senior Adam Barnhart.
“It was a great weekend for the team, and it is definitely something we can rely on with the season to continue,” said Brashear.
