This year, the girls’ tennis team is hosting a Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, August 31, at 3 p.m. at the tennis courts. This event is open to players of any skill level and costs $40 per team.
This tournament is taking place to help the team raise money to purchase the proper gear for their upcoming spring season.
“The last day for students to sign up will be Friday, August 23. We will also have medals for the winning team,” said Varsity Tennis Coach Tyla Whitfield.
Although the event is hosted at the tennis courts, the team plans to alter the courts in order to cater to the sport of pickleball.
“We are going to put colored tape on the courts to mark the new lines,” said Whitfield.
One of the people involved is senior Josh Zapien and his sister, eighth grader Briza Zapien.
“Pickleball is an interesting sport for me and my family. Since the sport is a lot like tennis and my siblings and I play tennis, we thought it would be good to play,” said Josh. “I have been playing for about two years now and I play very often.”
Briza is looking forward to having a perfect time.
“A strategy that I would use is probably to stay positive and swing through,” said Briza.
