Over winter break, PHS will have many athletic events, including wrestling meets, girl’s basketball tournaments, and boy’s basketball tournaments. With teams on the road, there will be multiple events to support.
The girl’s basketball team will be traveling to Hauser on December 26-28. The tournament will consist of 8 teams and will be varsity only. The first game will be on December 26th at 4:00 p.m. Head Coach Donavan Crews is going into this tournament looking for growth from his team and preparation for upcoming challenges.
“We are looking to get better every day and if we do that we feel like we will be ready for sectional in February,” said Crews.
Senior Lilly Hall is looking to take this tourney and use it as an opportunity to grow as a player.
“I’m looking forward to getting better with each game and hoping to win overall,” said Hall
The boy’s basketball team will be traveling to Hamilton Heights on December 27, with the first game starting at 11 a.m. The games will consist of Varsity only, but junior varsity will be playing in a separate tournament on January 6th at Barr Reeve. Junior Cooper Spires is highly anticipating the upcoming competition, and is ready to play with the team.
“I am looking forward to spending time with my teammates and bonding together to make our team really close, as well as competing against good competition and hopefully winning the Switzerland County tournament,” said Spires.
Head Coach Dusty Cole is looking for his team to build bonds, play good competition, and take in the experience.
“This should be an exciting tourney. The field is full of good basketball teams that are expected to have good seasons. We always take things one game at a time, so we will be focusing on Hamilton Heights to begin with. We are a bigger school with good athletes. They play good competition and will be battle-ready coming in. It should be a good match-up for us,” said Cole.
The wrestling team will be traveling to Columbus East on December 21st. The weigh-ins will start at 8 a.m. with a meet to follow at 9 am. In the Columbus East tournament, Head Coach JT Zapien is looking to see some progress on how far the team has come this season.
“I want the kids to have a good season. I want them to grow as individuals and as a team. So far I think they have all made a lot of progress. I think as a coaching staff we have worked really well together so far. I have some great guys on my staff, and they show up each and everyday for the kids, and to help the kids get better,” said Zapien.
Junior Kolt Bonta is looking for a few advances when the time comes for the tourney.
“I’m looking forward to being out with the team and trying my best to win my matches,” said Bonta.
