In the upcoming Winter Guard season, sophomore Ava Middleton will replace graduating senior Arah Brinkman. Middleton was selected by this season’s instructor, Katie White.
“She showed initiative and responsibility during the fall season, she was never scared to help anyone, and always had a good attitude,” said White.
Middleton has performed in two winter guard shows and two marching band shows.
This year, students can participate in three sections: a weapon, a dance, and a flag line.
The weapon consists of dealing with rifles and sabers. These are our strongest team members.
The dance line incorporates the movement of just the body while others spin around you.
Lastly, there is a flag line consisting of advanced flag work and tosses, which everyone will have a chance at.
This season’s Winter Guard show is titled “Alice in a Headlock,” based on the song “Headlock” by Imogen Heap. The show follows the story of Alice in Wonderland, starting with Alice falling into Wonderland and meeting the rabbit.
Middleton is on the weapon line and is featured in flags throughout the show as one of the leading roles, The White Queen.
“I’m nervous about leading a big group of kids that are all in my age range, but overall, I’m very excited to lead and perform with this amazing group of people,” said Middleton.
Also performing in the show this season are Brooke Goller as Alice, Paige Flick as Red Queen, Cheyenne Carter as White Rabbit, Marcus Longest as Mad Hatter, Ava Green as Cheshire Cat, Kyrah Fry as Caterpillar, Zoey Jenkins and Jasmine Young as the twins, and Ella Grunden and Aiyanna Hall as the cards.
The group will perform in the first contest in Terre Haute South on February 22nd.
