Paoli High School hosted the annual Mock Crash on Thursday, March 27, at the Lost River Career Co-op parking lot at 10 a.m.
School Resource Officer, Jon Deaton (pictured below), was been planning this event for the past three years.
The event welcomed students not only from Paoli, but also Orleans and Springs Valley as well.
Seniors Fletcher Cole, Brian Fullington, Ava Green, and Paige Flick were the four seniors from PHS who acted out the crash, and many groups and organizations from the community were involved as well. The Paoli Fire Department, EMS, Coroner, ISP, Prosecutors, equipment and vehicles from the community, and even speakers were included.
During the crash, the student actors and community volunteers acted out a crash where a drunk teenager crashed while driving his friends home from a party.
Cole played the role of driver, and after driving home while impaired, he got into a crash. He and Green were seriously injured, while Fullington and Flick ended up passing away.
The Mock Crash is held in the weeks before Prom to encourage safe decisions. The point of the Mock Crash is to teach students to be safe and to help teenagers make good decisions about impaired driving. Deaton wants to open teenagers’ eyes to the dangers of impaired driving and why they shouldn’t do it.
“I feel like it went well overall; there were a couple of hiccups, but we worked through them,” said Deaton.
After conducting the mock crash for the past three years, Deaton has ideas for changes in upcoming years.
“I will have a checklist for the week before to go over all of the equipment and personally verify all participants are contacted,” said Deaton.
Deaton will attend a county safety meeting with all of the schools to discuss future events.
