On Wednesday, March 5, PHS held the annual Life Hacks activity for the early release day in March. The event’s coordinator, Chris Lindley, sent out a form to the student body with a list of a variety of life hack options for the students to choose from. Lindley and the staff of PHS work hard and want to do all they can to help prepare students for life after high school. The Life Hacks workshop activity is one way they feel they can do that.
“Students often talk about how they feel unprepared for adult life, so this is a small way that we can help them. Probably more important is the opportunity to start building a network of knowledge about who offers what services and information in our community. We are also teaching the Indiana Employability Skills as several of our workshops discuss what skills are vital to the world of work as well as our presenters demonstrating these skills,” said Lindley.
The topics ranged from small and simple things to more complex life hacks.
Along with the workshops from last year’s Life Hack event, there were new additional workshops added at the request of the students.
The newest workshops were Food Storage and Safety, Travel Planning, Anti-Vaping, and the most popular one, Hair Care and Styling.
The most requested life hack workshop by the student body was the Hair Care and Styling. This workshop was one that had not been offered in previous years, and many girls were very pleased with what they learned from it.
“I had so many girls ask for it that I had virtually no openings by the time I had finished scheduling seniors and juniors,” said Lindley.
Junior Tori Patton was one of the many students who attended the Hair Care and Styling workshop. Patton loves doing hair, and even though she already knows a lot about it, she was able to learn something new while having a fun experience with the workshop’s educators.
“My favorite part about the Hair Care and Styling Life Hack shop was that they were very nice to us all and even curled some girls’ hair, showing us how to take care of our hair and safely style it. Something I learned that will be helpful in the future is about how important it is to use heat protectant before styling and even blow drying, ” said Patton.
As there were new workshops added to the Life Hack’s event for the students, new educators came with them. A few of the additional presenters from the community were Toni Dominguez from the Heart Corps and Lindsey Vernon from Studio 59 Hair Salon. Vernon was one of the presenters for the Hair Care and Styling workshop and Dominguez presented life hacks about vaping and its dangers.
There were also returning presenters from the community who came to enhance the knowledge of the student body; Jamey Sullivan, Wes Whitfield, Hilary Burton, Frankie Warren, Michael Busick, Jamie Walker, Logan Buchanan, and Daniel Springer were the returning presenters.
