For Gridiron Glory

A battle that began in 1994 still going strong

As long as anyone can remember, Paoli and Springs Valley have clashed in a battle on the gridiron, a game that is always exciting to see. The two teams have kept the rivalry alive for more than 20 years.

The latest battle will take place on September 6 at 7 p.m. at Cook Field.

“It is important to beat Valley, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s great, the fans come out and support us in the game,” said senior safety Evan Jones.

The battle was named the “Orange Bowl” long before the trophy was bought.

In 2000, former athletic director Darrell Newkirk and Rob Hayworth, the Springs Valley Athletic Director at the time, bought the Orange Bowl trophy. From then on, the meeting between the two teams became known as the Orange Bowl.

Since 2000, the Rams have hoisted the trophy seven of the thirteen meetings. The Rams have dominated in recent years (2008-2012), and they are expecting another victory.
“The Springs Valley game has always been such a big rivalry,” said senior split end Garrett Strange.

In the Rams first game of the year, against Salem the team didn’t give a great debut. With seven turnovers, the Rams struggled on the offensive side of the ball. Although they had seven turnovers, the Rams had 300 plus yards of offense.

The no huddle also worked out for the Rams who had over 70 plays in one game. This is a great improvement from last season. The numbers give the Rams room for improvement on offense this season.

In that game, defense was stellar, allowing Salem to have negative 17 yards of offense. Junior Mark Miles, Junior Ruger Gill and Senior Joey Hoffman put up great performances. The Rams secondary performed very well allowing only two completed passes and racking up an interception.

For the Blackhawks, took a loss to South Central, 46 to 30. The Blackhawks had trouble defending the passing game, giving up 235 yards through the air. They also gave up 152 yards on the ground.

It seems that the fumble disease is going around in Orange County. Springs Valley had eight fumbles and lost four of them.

On offense the Blackhawks leading rusher was freshman O’Brien Selby with 11 carries for 63 yards. Springs Valley had 230 yards on the ground and 151 yards in the air for a total of 381 yards of offense.

If all goes well, the Rams will take home the trophy yet another time this year.
