This Saturday, the Rams Wrestling team will travel to Southridge High School to compete in the IHSAA Wrestling Sectional, part of the state post-season tournament. Other participating teams include Mitchell, New Albany, Floyd Central, Forest Park, Pike Central, Tell City, Southridge, Jasper, and North Knox.
Unlike the IHSAA Regionals, it will be a two-elimination tournament.
A wrestler who loses will participate in the consolation bracket, where the losing wrestlers can work their way back from eighth to third place.
For each individual’s weight classes, the Rams will be sophomore Wyatt Brashear for 126, freshmen Jordan Albertson for 132 and Moise Hall for 138, juniors Deegan Brashear for 144, Kolt Bonta for 150, and Charlie Higgins for 165, and freshman Landen Baker for 215.
Senior Jonny Shellenberger is the highest-seeded wrestler in his respective weight class and is one of four on a watchlist for the 157 weight class. Though he has suffered through a cauliflower ear and sternum recovery, he has shown outstanding effort to work through it and continue to have a good season.
“Jonny had a good senior season, and he did have a minor setback at the beginning of the season with an injury. He bounced back from that and has had a very strong second half of the season. I think Jonny can have a really good postseason, he is in a really tough weight class, but I think if he can stay healthy and he wrestles to the best of his ability that he can have a great postseason,” said the Varsity Wrestling Head Coach JT Zapien.
Ram fans attending the event must pay a $6 admission fee.
