Locura de Marzo is a competition similar to what basketball fans know as the NCAA March Madness tournament. The competition started on February 21 and will continue until March 17, when a winner is selected.
Spanish teachers around the world have picked sixteen well-known Latin songs. Students in these Spanish classes listen to and learn more about the music and the artists throughout the month. The voting occurs every two days online, and the students pick the songs they like or enjoy the most.
Students worldwide in Spanish I-III participate in this activity every year. Each student creates a bracket and chooses their favorite songs to advance. As this continues, the students learn about each artist and their culture.
“I learned about the Locura de Marzo Spanish language music competition in 2019-2020, which was my first year teaching Spanish at Paoli. I wanted to participate because music is a great way to learn about other cultures. During this tournament, students are exposed to current, popular music and artists from Colombia, Spain, Puerto Rico, Mexico, etc. We use Spanish to discuss the artists, songs we like, and results of each matchup,” said Spanish teacher Crystal Shellenberger.
Students can follow the matchups until the end of the tournament, when a champion is decided.
