Peyton Baker, a standout senior who is preparing to take his football career to the next level at Hanover College. Unlike many of his peers who are hanging up their cleats, Baker is seizing the opportunity to continue playing the sport he loves at the collegiate level.
“It was a real surprise when the coach came and talked to me about continuing my football career after high school. Before that point, I thought my final time wearing pads would be as a Paoli Ram when we ended our season,” said Baker.
His dedication and hard work have opened doors that he once thought were closed.
“It’s a complete honor and I’m so glad I have been blessed with the opportunity to play the sport I love for four more years and go to the place where I’m excited and happy to call home,” said Baker.
During his high school season, Baker excelled as a center; however, his exact role on the Hanover football team is yet to be determined. His high school coach, Neil Dittmer, is confident that Baker’s presence will be felt on the field.
“He has a good opportunity to continue his playing career, and I am excited to see him further develop his game. He will need to work hard but I think he has the right mindset to be successful,” said Dittmer.
However, Baker’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Recently, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, he has had to adapt to a new lifestyle while maintaining his athletic performance.
“It was right after I had committed to play at the next level. It is not going to be very easy to manage, not only trying to be the best possible player I can be but also making sure I keep my health under control,” said Baker.
Baker’s determination to overcome his diagnosis is a testament to his resilience.
“I will make sure that diabetes doesn’t control me, but instead, I take control of my diabetes and show I am more than just this obstacle on the road. It will not stop me from living my best life and playing the game that I truly love,” said Baker.
He remains focused on his goals and is determined to succeed both academically and athletically at Hanover.
As he prepares for this new chapter, Baker looks forward to the competition, companionship, and experiences that come with being part of a college team.
