In July, Carol Eubank stepped into the role of principal at Shoals Middle School after years of teaching English at PHS.
Eubank earned her Master’s degree in education but later decided to pursue a career in administration. In 2023, she obtained a graduate certificate in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education while teaching at PHS. In November 2024, Eubank passed the Praxis test, a series of assessments for prospective and practicing educators in the United States. She then applied for an administrative license in January 2025. The State of Indiana issued a probationary license, which gave Eubank two years to get an administrative position and work toward earning her professional license in administration.
In May 2025, Eubank updated her resume and applied to several local schools. Shortly after, she received a call from Shoals Community School Corporation. The acting superintendent, Kindra Hovis, who was one of Eubank’s students, is stepping down to become the high school principal. The new superintendent, Dr. Sue Lanham, is also a former colleague of Eubank’s.
“The two ladies called to check in on me and see if I had completed my education and licensure. Then, they informed me they were posting a new position for a middle school principal, and they encouraged me to apply. I interviewed with the school board a couple of weeks later, and I accepted the position later that evening,” said Eubank.
Eubank has enjoyed being the middle school principal at Shoals so far, because there is something new to address every minute.
“Being a principal involves a lot of problem-solving, not only for teachers and students, but also for their parents and community support organizations. I love being able to coordinate magic every day with all of our stakeholders. I have learned something new every day, which I find refreshing and engaging,” said Eubank.
Eubank has also enjoyed the fact that her middle school students are the children of the students she taught when she worked at Shoals 20 years ago. She is excited to have the second generation of her first students.
While she enjoys being the middle school principal at Shoals, she also misses many aspects of PHS.
“I miss organizing the classroom chaos! I miss getting to know my students so well and watching them mature into critical thinkers. I miss lunches with my teacher bestie–Mrs Nichols, hall duty with Mrs. Phillips, and planning the senior events with Mrs. Higgins,” said Eubank.
