The Spanish Club is one of the opportunities students have to get involved at PHS. Spanish teacher Crystal Shellenberger leads the group and sees her club’s role as one that can connect students to a bigger world.
“Many students are interested in learning about other cultures around the world, but they might not be able to take Spanish due to scheduling. This club is open to any student, whether or not they are enrolled in Spanish class with me,” said Shellenberger.
This year, the club offers a variety of activities for its members to get involved in.
“We have monthly activities like traditional Mexican Lotería this month. Next month, we will listen to popular music in Spanish by artists from around the world. In November, we’ll play number BINGO. I like to have candies from different parts of the world as prizes. This year, we would like to explore cooking some popular dishes from different parts of the world where Spanish is spoken,” said Shellenberger.
During the first meeting on August 28, the group talked about activities they want to participate in and also elected officers. Officers are in charge of planning, making announcements, forming committees, etc. The Spanish club officers are President Aurora Hays, Vice President Ava Hall, Co-Secretaries Kolt Bonta and Tayla Bolin, and Treasurer Audrey Hall.
“I hope the Spanish club can add more activities and get more students involved this year. We already have a lot of events coming up, and we would be happy to see more members or students who would like to participate in the games and activities that we’ve been working to plan,” said Hays.
Shellenberger hopes that not only are their popular activities participated in, but also that some new opportunities are available to members.
“We hope to continue with some of the popular activities like games and music during homeroom, but we’d also like to come up with some new ideas,” said Shellenberger.
The Spanish club will meet during homeroom on the last Thursday of each month, and students must attend two or more meetings to be eligible to attend a field trip.
Shellenberger would like to have more students join the club. Students in grades 7-12 are welcome to join the Spanish club.
“I hope the Spanish club can foster curiosity and desire to learn about other cultures,” said Shellenberger.
