A coin toss occurs at the start of each football game, and is the moment when the referees decide who gets the ball first and who gets it at halftime. The away team will either call heads or tails. If they win, they can decide whether they want the ball first or at halftime. If they lose, the home team gets to decide who gets the ball first and who gets it at halftime.
The four players who go out to the middle of the field for the toss are the captains for that game, and the players who fill these roles can change from week to week.
Head Football Coach Neil Dittmer and his staff determine who gets to be captains for each game.
“The coaching staff will get together to determine who the captains will be based on how they did at practice during that week,” said Dittmer.
Captains are typically seniors, but they do not always have to be. It is a big honor to be picked as captain before the game.
“We expect our captains to uphold our standard of conduct throughout the game and to be our voice on the field,” said Dittmer.
This season, the Rams are led by 13 seniors.
