If you have looked around Paoli, you might have seen a few new art installations. These are pieces of art that are part of the Indiana Arts Commission, presented by Possibilities in Paoli. Recently, the group has taken on a new mural to be displayed at the Paoli Public Library.
“It started back when we were planning the Square Arts Festival a year ago, because we wanted a community art project, and we wanted to try to get people who had never painted before. That was the goal, and for people to be excited about what they create and get to take something home,” said Project Coordinator Shannon Cangey.
The mural will be a collection of 1152 hand-painted tiles (shown above) by members of the community that, when viewed up close, will show each artist’s unique style, but when viewed from a distance, will show the image of two kids sitting under a tree, one child reading a book and the other playing the guitar.
Cangey is a member of the board and has been working alongside volunteers to create a mosaic mural. She and her team have been traveling from fair to fair, encouraging people in the community to design a four-by-four tile using specific colors.
Recently, she has reached out to PHS art teacher Chris Jones for some assistance in acquiring more tiles to be a part of the mural.
“Our kids did a really good job helping Shannon out with what should be a great local art project,” said Jones.
For Cangey, it was challenging to convey her vision to those working alongside her, but her passion and determination were easy to get behind.
“It was hard because even my organization, Possibilities in Paoli, didn’t really understand what I was doing. They thought that I was gonna get all these and send them to a company, and they were gonna put them into a picture. To me, it needs to be a real mosaic mural where all the pieces are put together,” said Cangey.
Along with this mural, Possibilities in Paoli is actively involved in other art projects throughout the community. They are part of the 50 in 50 project, with pieces scattered all around town. They also participated in the Square Arts Festival and designed the window paintings visible along the square.
This also opens up opportunities for future projects.
“I’ve learned a lot from doing this mural, so I feel like I could do it again and do it easier. I know Team OC talked about doing one in Crawford County,” said Cangey.
There are numerous opportunities to collaborate with Cangey and her team on community projects. On November 8, at 9 a.m., the community is welcome to join the painting day on the square.
