There are many different paths for seniors to take after they graduate high school. Some choose to attend a university and pursue a degree of their choice. However, a select few dedicate themselves to joining a branch of the United States military. There are an abundance of reasons students would want to join the military.

“When asked why I would join, a myriad of reasons come to mind: Free college education after service, the ability to work with interesting people and interesting things, like nuclear reactors and advanced aircraft,” said senior Zachary Orth.

Orth is one of the many selfless seniors choosing to join the military. He is planning on being a part of the Navy as a submariner. To obtain a job as a submariner, Orth must undergo specific training provided by the Navy. Aside from the training specifications, Orth is very eager to become a naval submariner and start his exciting career as a member of the United States Navy.

“For me, I see the military as a career before college, a chance to get my feet wet in a serious STEM field before even going into my major on the premise that I could potentially waste thousands pursuing an engineering degree I may or may not earn,” said Orth.

Another 2017 military senior is Keagan Strange. Strange is planning on joining the Marine Corps following his senior year. Apart from the free college education and the work with interesting people, Strange has other reasons to join the military.

“I would like to join the Marine Corps because I feel I should give back to my country,” said Strange.

However, Strange has a job field of 0311 and hopes to get deployed as soon as possible as a rifleman. He feels he can contribute and assist the Marine Corps best in this position.

Senior Tyler Satterfield is also very committed to joining the United States Marine Corps. He has always looked up to the military, the Marine Corps in particular. As reasons to join the military varies with every person, Satterfield’s reason, however, is a little more personal.

“The reason I want to join the United States Marine Corps is because I want to make a difference in more than just a single town and I want to prove to everyone that doubted me that I can do it,” said Satterfield.

As Satterfield is awaiting for dates for specific evaluations to join the Marine Corps, he is undergoing training throughout some days of the week. As many seniors might want to experience the college life immediately after high school, that is not the case for Satterfield.

“I believe that it is all about your personal preference. I’m not college material, I’ve accepted that. If you want to go to college first, and the join, you are still respected by me,” said Satterfield.

Choosing the path of joining the United States military is a very bold decision for any senior. This choice can affect someone’s life entirely; making military seniors very respectable.
