The Games Club Euchre Tournament began on Tuesday, March 7. Eleven teams joined the tournament and faced off in the cafeteria during homeroom.

Each day during homeroom, the teams that faced each other were randomly selected. Each team consisted of two people and partners are required to sit across from each other.

In the game of euchre, the players have a chance to make the trumps (the highest suit called). For three tricks (if they made the trump), they get one point; for five tricks, they get two; if they went alone and get five tricks, they get four; if they didn’t get at least three tricks, the other team gets two points. Whoever gets to ten points first wins. If neither team got to ten points by the end of homeroom, whoever had the highest score won.

Games Club Sponsor Chris Lindley brought back the tournament after a few years without it.

“I hope this will increase exposure for this great card game that is such a part of our local culture and is something that you can play your whole life. Already we have people excited about participating in the future as well as people wanting to learn how to play. Tentatively we are planning on hosting a workshop next fall to teach euchre to those who want to learn,” said Lindley.

During homeroom on Wednesday, March 15, Resource teacher Alexis Spear and Throop Teacher Tyler Kumpf defeated the senior team of Braven Cook with Lucus Stroud to win the tourney overall.
