The Pride of Paoli is getting ready for a big new show. The band will perform at football games and contests from September to November. This summer, they have lots of practice planned.
This year’s show has a fun and meaningful theme.
“On the surface, we are doing a show about tables and chairs,” said Band Director Christian Karkosky. “We are going to have large table props and chairs for each member of the band that will move throughout the show.”
But the show means something deeper, too.
“On a deeper level, the show is about finding your place to belong and coming together with the people who matter most in your life,” he said.
Karkosky wants the band to grow this season in many ways.
“We want to develop our musical skills and performance abilities,” he said. “We also want to foster a culture of acceptance and excellence through our work on the show.”
The band’s big goal is to return to the State Finals to defend their title.
“Our ultimate goal is to qualify in the top 10 for our class and make another trip to State Finals by the end of the season,” Karkosky added.
This year’s drum major will be current sophomore Vanessa Thacker. She has been the drum major for two seasons already.
“She has been a drum major the past two seasons and this year will be a great influence on everyone,” said Karkosky.
He also said the older students will help set a great example.
“I think we will see a lot of growth from everybody this year with our veteran students leading the way.”
The band has a busy summer ahead. Here is what to expect:
In May, the percussion section kicks things off with Percussion Camp from May 26–29, running from 9 a.m. to noon each day. This is the first round of summer rehearsals, just for students who play percussion instruments.
In June, percussion students continue camp June 1–5 from 9 a.m. to noon. Then the rest of the band joins in. Rehearsals for winds and guard take place on evenings throughout June, from 6–8 p.m.
“Rehearsals for winds and guard are the first chance after Rookie Camp to get some more in-depth training and get to know the instructors a little bit more,” said Karkosky.
In July, things really get exciting for band members. Pre-Camp Rehearsals run July 13, 14, and 16 from 5–8 p.m. Then Band Camp takes place July 20–24 and July 27–31, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. There will be a Band Party on July 24 from 6–9 p.m., and a Community Performance on July 31 at 7 p.m.
“Pre-Camp and Band Camp are when we start learning the outdoor part of our show,” said Karkosky. “These are really fun rehearsals where we spend time learning music, drill formations, holding team-building activities, and really bond as a band family.”
Anyone can join the marching band — no experience needed.
“We are open to anyone at any experience level. If you have the desire to learn, we can teach you!” said Karkosky.
