There’s a new favorite in the café — ice cream! And it’s quickly become the coolest part of lunch.
“We started serving it about a month ago,” says Shelby Sloan, Director of Nutrition Services. “The idea came from students — and my own daughter, actually. She said, ‘Mom, it’s not fair that we have ice cream, but the high school doesn’t!’ She was right!”
Now, every lunch break, students can grab a treat for $1.50, whether it’s classic chocolate or strawberry, or something more fun like cotton candy, blue raspberry, or cherry fruit ice. There are even non-dairy and gluten-free options, so no one misses out.
Sales have been growing — especially on Fridays. “We thought it was just a Friday thing,” said Sloan. “But it turns out kids want ice cream every day!”
Currently, the freezer stocks 12–15 flavors, with deliveries made once a month (soon to be every other week). And if demand keeps up, there might even be cookies and brownies coming soon.
“We’ll keep it going as long as the kids want it,” Sloan said with a smile. And judging by the lunchtime rush, this sweet tradition is here to stay.
