There are many changes happening in PHS right now. New clubs are forming, the administration and staff are changing, and even the sports leadership is shifting. Some of us are happy with this, but many students do not know how to feel about these changes.
Though most people complain there are not enough activities to participate in, there is still hesitation on the part of the staff to join something new. How will it work? Will we have time? Is it worth it to get involved?
When asked how likely our staff is to join new activities, like clubs, sports, ect., 42.6% said they are three out of five likely to, and 33.3% said four. Only one person responded with a five out of five.
Some staff members are less fond and more hesitant to change. Many members think this is caused by a fear or lack of self-confidence.
There are many clubs and sports at PHS, and they could all benefit from more student involvement. Students need to be able to get out of their comfort zone and join new things.
Some Staff Members believe sports specifically need more involvement. Nearly half of our staff stated sports, whether it’s golf, tennis, or basketball, need more people to step up and wear purple and gold.
With Mr. Dittmer taking a step down from his coaching career, the involvement of sports and the student body’s fear of change are very hot topics currently.
This is a good change, but it will cause more shifts in other departments.
Mr. Dittmer was previously the head coach of the Varsity football and softball teams. He will not be continuing coaching these sports, so there will be
changes there. A new coaching staff for both teams means new rules and new expectations. As an athlete, once you know your team and the coach’s rules, it is scary to think about what the new rules could be.
This could be a good and a bad change for students and players. Some of the players may not want to play in the upcoming seasons, because they
might have doubts or concerns about how the season with a new coach will turn out. Students who have considered playing may choose not to play because of these transitions, but it may also help them decide to play because it is a fresh start with a new coach. This transition seems like it will be beneficial for some people, but not everyone.
Clubs like Ratatouille Rams and Bring Change to Mind (BC2M) are two amazing ways to try new clubs. They have both been recently started and are very interactive. It is hard to complain about a new activity when the meetings involve food and hot cocoa, taking a chance on both of these clubs so far might only result in a full stomach and free chocolate, two risks we think are worth taking.
Overall, our Staff is telling people to get outside of their box and do not shy away from new experiences and opportunities. Change is natural and a part of life; it can be bittersweet, but it is better to get over your fears and help your high school experience be more memorable. Joining something new might change your life in the best way possible.
