SRO Program Targets Substance Abuse Awareness

School Resource Officer John Deaton.

School Resource Officer John Deaton is working on a project to educate students on the dangers of substance abuse. He plans to bring the lessons to junior high classes and then work his way up to meeting with high school students.

“I am doing it to help educate the youth of our community and let them know mistakes aren’t the end of it, you can come back and I want to hopefully prevent them from making those mistakes to begin with,” said Deaton. 

Deaton does not plan to present these lessons alone and is planning to invite a member of the community, Chrissy Evans.

“She has personal experience and also has taken and completed pure recovery coach courses,” said Deaton. 

Deaton plans to meet with students on Tuesdays and Thursdays during homeroom with the goal of bringing awareness to the dangers of substance abuse and spreading awareness of how decisions affect yo
