Senior Billy Bob Apple recently passed his test to become a CDL-certified driver as part of the Commercial Drivers Operations courses through the Lost River Career Co-op. Apple spends three class periods a day with course instructor Joe Byrum.

“Billy was a very good student who listened and did what he was asked to do. He progressed every day that he drove the semi. I am very proud of Billy’s accomplishments. Billy will do great in whatever he does,” said Byrum.
In the course, Apple learned all the skills needed to pass the test, enabling him to drive semi trucks after high school. Students in the course learn skills all drivers need, including bobtailing and driving without a trailer. Once the students have mastered those skills, they add a trailer and drive around the campus lot. The students also set up a coned section that tests their ability to park within three-foot boxes, parallel park, and control the trailer’s location.
After the students learn these stills, they learn pre-trip, which consists of checking all major and minor components of the tractor-trailer.
Apple was influenced by his parents to consider a career in driving. Both his father, Kevin, and mother, Ginny, have been driving trucks for many years. Kevin has 35 years of driving experience and started his own business, Kevin Apple Lumber, in 1998.
Kevin has simple advice for his son.
“Work hard while you are young,” said Kevin.
Billy’s mom, Ginny, began driving in 2004, when the company name changed to KGB Lumber for Kevin, Ginny, and Billy. She believes what her son has accomplished will open many doors for him.

“I’m so proud of Billy for earning his CDL. Having them will open up so many job opportunities for him. Whatever road he chooses in life, I know he will do great,¨ said Ginny.
After high school, Apple does not plan to drive for the family business, but will help them if they need it.
“I plan to explore outside of what I’ve been around my whole life,” said Apple.
Apple will be driving in-state until he turns 21 due to Indiana laws. Once he reaches the age, Apple hopes to travel out of state and continue building his career on the road.
Apple believes this certification is a great idea for any student wanting a plan for work after high school.
“Future students need to understand that having your CDL is an amazing thing to have in your back pocket; you can always find a truck driving job for anyone,” said Apple.
