“Shatter Me” by Tahereh Mafi is a young adult fiction book series that I love! The first book came out in 2011, and as of 2025, there are eleven books in the series, all of which make the story much more interesting. The books are set in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by a strict group called The Reestablishment. The main character, Juliette Ferrars, is a seventeen-year-old girl whose touch kills people. That part alone hooked me right from the beginning.
At first, Juliette is imprisoned because everyone is afraid of her powers. She’s isolated and struggling with a lot of trauma. But then the Reestablishment decides to use her as a weapon. As you read more, though, you get to watch Juliette go from being scared and unsure of herself to learning how to control her powers and becoming someone who stands up for herself and leads a rebellion. She has to deal with a lot, like complicated friendships and an intense love triangle between Adam Kent and Aaron Warner.
What I love most about “Shatter Me” is how the author shows Juliette’s growth. She starts off feeling like a monster, but then she figures out that her power can be used for something good. The writing style is really unique too; it feels like you’re inside Juliette’s head, and you can feel everything she’s going through. Some people might not like how dramatic it gets, but I honestly think that’s what makes it so good. It’s messy and emotional, just like real life.
This book series is what got me into reading in the first place. If you like stories with powerful characters, dystopian worlds, and a lot of action, you should give “Shatter Me” a try. Even if it’s not your favorite, I think it’s worth taking a chance on. I would 100% recommend it to anyone who wants to read something exciting yet also full of heart.
