Do you believe that there is hidden money buried somewhere in Paoli? Well, Jamal Turner truly believed there was buried treasure in his town, but life is still a mess, even if there is treasure to find. “On My Block” is one of those shows that I could watch again for the first time. The show tackles serious, modern topics in a more light-hearted way.
The first episode of “On My Block” premiered on March 16, 2018, and the final episode premiered on October 4, 2021. The show follows a group of four high school students in a predominantly Hispanic and black neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles. Through the four seasons, thirty-eight episodes, you get to see how Monse, Ruby, Jamal, and Cesar confront the challenges of adolescence and life.
“On My Block” has so much lore behind each character, and each character connects with the others for a truly immersive experience. You start to see yourself in character, going through challenging life events, such as Monse tries to find and meet up with her biological mother after she abandoned her at an early age. Ruby is trying to achieve that high school romance. Cesar is figuring out where he belongs, trying not to end up like his brother in a gang on his block, but he doesn’t have many other options. Or Jamal is trying to impress his dad by faking being on the football team when all he really cares about is finding the hidden money, also known as the RollerWorld money.
If you like slice-of-life comedies or if you are interested in whether the RollerWorld money is real, you should check out “On My Block” on Netflix.
