Two Varsity winter sports seasons finished their seasons in early February. First off is Lady Rams Basketball. The Lady Rams’ season ended on February 4th in the first round of the Sectional against Providence. The Lady Rams were defeated 34-56.
In Head Coach Aaron Key’s first season, his team finished with a record of 7-17.
“I thought the first season went well. We had a lot of growth from the beginning of summer to the end of the season. I’m looking forward to a large portion of our varsity roster returning for next year. The girls will know what to expect, and we will be able to get into things much faster this upcoming summer as we prepare for the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to season number two as we continue to improve and compete,” said Key.
Next is the Varsity Wrestling team. Their season ended on February 7, after senior Deegan Brashear and sophomore Newt Green both qualified out of Sectional as individuals but lost in Regionals at Bloomington South. As a team, they finished the season with a 5-13 record.
In the sectional, the Rams had six wrestlers place. Placing for the Rams was senior Deegan Brashear, who placed 3rd; senior Tyler Hannon, and sophomores Jordan Albertson and Newt Green, who placed 5th, and senior Kolt Bonta and sophomore Landen Baker, who placed 6th.
The top four placers from the Sectional move on to Regional, so Deegan Brashear and Newt Green moved on because a wrestler was injured. At the
Regional, both Brashear and Green lost their first match.
“I think the wrestling team performed very well this season. We had some highs and lows like most teams deal with, but I feel like the wrestlers were really good at overcoming those low moments. We had some guys that really made a lot of progress this season, and I’m looking forward to them building on that next season,” said Head Wrestling Coach J.T. Zapien.
