Last Friday, December 9, the Rams Basketball team left home for a game at West Washington to face the Senators, and won with a score of 40-33. This was their first Varsity Conference game, which resulted in a win. Their record is now 3-0.

Leading scorers for the Rams were sophomore Fletcher Cole with 19 points, junior Trey Rominger with 7 points and junior Willson Windhorst with 6 points.

Varsity Head Coach Dusty Cole sums up the game.

Points were difficult to come by for both teams. Honestly, I think it was your typical early season Conference matchup. Both teams know each other so well, that it makes things tough and on top of that, neither team shot the ball particularly well when they did get a good look,” said Cole.

This was an area of expertise for the Rams, but it took more than defense to get the win.

“We have gotten pretty comfortable playing in low scoring, grind it out, games. On top of that, we had to play through lots of foul trouble and we also had a couple of kids that weren’t quite 100 percent. This group has a lot of toughness and a lot of grit, both of which are very important in games like this,” said Cole.

Windhorst has ideas on where the team can improve.

“We could have improved on our help side defense, as well as our transition defense,” said Windhorst.

Cole gives a shoutout to three key defensive players.

“Brandon Cook and Trey Rominger did a great job limiting Kenton Chase’s production. Kenton is really quick and hard to guard. One of our biggest objectives on defense was to keep him out of the paint, and those guys did a great job of that. To start the game, Willson Windhorst was assigned to WW leading scorer Lane Hoefler. Willson did a wonderful job and didn’t give Lane any good looks early on,” said Cole.

Rominger shares his thoughts on his personal effort.

“I feel like I did good, but I could’ve tried to take more charges,” said Rominger.

The biggest surprise of the night might have been Treighlin Minton. Treighlin really gave us some HUGE minutes off the bench. He was really physical with Lane and played tremendous defense. We got in some foul trouble early, and Treighlin was a nice surprise off the bench. He had great energy,” said Cole.

Minton describes his feelings about guarding one of the Senators key players.

“When I went in, my goal was to not let Lane score and defend one of their best players. I think I did good, obviously I could have done some things better but overall I think I did good,” said Minton.

The Rams will host Austin tomorrow, for the Winter Homecoming game, JV will start at 6 p.m. with Varsity to follow.
